Today, our friend Hepcat Hannah nominated our blog for the Liebster Award. Being fond of awards and Hannah, I promptly checked into it to see what all of the fuss was about. The Liebster Award is given to bloggers by other bloggers as a show of support and exposure. As Hannah pointed out in her blog, "liebster" means "dearest" in German, and it is a nice way of recognizing others. Thanks, Hannah! (Be sure to check out Hannah's classy and vintage inspired blog!)
The Liebster Award puts me in mind of modern day chain mail, and as a fun post for our dear readers, I’m happy to pass this one along.
Hannah asked me eleven questions, which I have answered below. Following my answers are my Liebster nominations for amazing women I met at the WITS ’16 conference I’ve been gabbing about. So buckle up, and get ready to learn more about the female component of the WanderLost Travels team.
1. Tell me about yourself
I’m a travel-loving lady proudly representing Midwest, USA! Each year I travel more extensively than the last, and I can’t wait to look back at age 50 and see where I’ve been. I love to go to quirky places and interact with new people. Aside from travel, I adore my nephews (and recently made friends with the fussy baby, which is a high accomplishment in my book), I’m working on publishing a book of poetry, and I do marketing consulting in addition to my day job.
2. What’s your blog all about?
Our blog is about finding knowledge, passion, and life through traveling. We believe travel will help you in the quest to leading a fulfilling life. We hope our journey will inspire your own adventures! Find more about our tagline and values on our About Us page.
3. What do you love about blogging?
I love showing others places, people, and ideas they might not have been exposed to otherwise. Blogging is also an amazing way to connect with other travel lovers, who are an exceptionally supportive and encouraging bunch. The perks of self-expression through writing also have me loving this job.
4. What is one goal you have for your blog in 2016?
We are currently creating a series of vlogs with easy tips on how to save money for travel, and we hope to launch it soon!
5. What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Skydiving, hands-down. That day is burned into my mind as holding some of the most relaxing and stressful moments in my life. Once you’ve survived the dramatic, air gasping freefall and the parachute has successfully deployed, the feeling you get looking down over miles of fields and natural beauty while less encumbered by gravity is (almost) indescribable.
However, before you get to the amazing part, you have to deal with the unexpected, heart-wrenching moment that comes from seeing someone you care about voluntarily jumping out of a perfectly good airplane before you.
Oh, and the professional I was strapped to had the worst attitude I’d ever seen. However, since he seemed to have a big ego, I didn’t think he was going to let himself die. Because of this, I was able to relax and trust that I was going to be ok. I was not disappointed – we did loads of tricks on our way down and had the smoothest landing of the other jumpers.
Signing the waiver was also a life-defining moment.
6. Where is your next trip?
Our next scheduled trip starts in June, where we’ll travel to Anaheim, California for VidCon and then trek our way across Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada. Let us know if you’re going to be in any of these states in June / July and we’ll get together! Or send us recommendations of places to go.
7. What is your spirit animal and why?
This question cracks me up. Back in a college poetry writing class, we had to select cards that told us our spirit animals. Mine was a dragonfly, said to be wild and passionate in their youth, and becoming sage and wise in old age. I hope the same for my life.
8. Favorite book?
As someone with a degree in English Literature, this question is hard to answer. I love To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. If you’ve ever read Virginia Woolf, message me and let’s chat. I’m curious to get your take on her style!
9. Best meal you’ve eaten while traveling?
There was the time I ate crickets, a scorpion in tequila, and cow tongue in Mexico… It was the most surprisingly delicious meal I’ve ever eaten. Check out the post here if you missed it. Aside from that, everything during my month in Tianjin, China was fantastic. I still can’t enjoy Chinese food at home!
10. Would you quit your job to travel for a year?
I believe most people would love to do this. The answer depends on whether or not your boss is subscribed to your blog.
11. What are three things you cannot travel without?
My grandmother’s advice, a good moisturizer / sunscreen, and a camera. I also prefer not to travel without Jake, the handsome guy you know and love as my counterpart and creator of WanderLost Travels.
