7 Reasons Why Travel Should Be Your New Year’s Resolution

1. You'll broaden your horizons.

Travel sends you to more places than from Point A to Point B. It takes you on a physical, mental, and emotional journey that will challenge and shape you as an individual. You will interact with different people, learn new facts, and see gorgeous natural and man-made works of art. Interacting with all of these different things will get you out of your comfort zone, and your view of the world (and yourself) will be more well-rounded.

2. If not now, when?

(It's not just the tagline Oprah's using in her Weight Watcher's commercials.) If you're not going to travel in 2016, when will you? You owe it to yourself to unplug from that grueling day job and go on the adventure you've been working so hard for. There are so many places in the world to explore, and you need to start now to make a fraction of a dent in the list.

3. Your social skills will improve.

Traveling can help the person inside each of us who gets sweaty palms thinking about addressing a crowd. If you're a bit of an introvert or not as well-spoken as you wish to be, traveling presents an opportunity to practice your interactions. You can be freer to initiate small talk or ask a question without the fear of rejection from someone in your hometown that you may bump into again. You may be surprised by the deep conversations or genuine friendships that develop.

4. You'll learn.

Whether it's bumping into a knowledgeable local and learning about your current coordinates or reading a historical marker at a park, your brain will be stimulated by the new information you're pumping into it. Ms. Frizzle couldn't be prouder.

5. It's an easy resolution to keep.

Gone are the years of failed resolutions and the inevitable guilt that comes with them! If you decide you want to travel more, it's as easy as hopping on a bike and going to the park you never visit in your city, or visiting a lake in a nearby town. Travel doesn't have to mean crazy, year-long plans. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Look for opportunities to go on adventures in the New Year, and you'll be patting yourself on the back when everyone stops going to the gym in February.

6. Most of your New Year's Resolutions can be rolled into this one resolution.

Lose weight. Travel by trail and go hiking. Not only will you get in shape, but you'll be surrounded by gorgeous scenery instead of staring jealously at the back of some super fit bro (do you even lift?) at the gym. Getting actively acclimated outside can help you not feel so intimidated at the gym. Traveling to new places may help you discover healthier foods that you crave and can make when you return home.

Be more adventurous. Go on an actual adventure. It's that simple.

Save money and keep traveling. Learning how to budget for travel will help you with your overall budgeting strategy. Pick up a book on Travel Hacking and incorporate a few saving techniques into your portfolio. From Couchsurfing and AirBnB to WWOOFing or using a travel credit card, there are countless solutions to make travel more affordable and get you on the road.

Fall in love. Sparks may fly between you and a city, its culture, or its food (see you later, eHarmony)! Don't be surprised if traveling gives you greater sense of self that leads you to supplying part of the love and contentment you may have been looking elsewhere for. As you pursue your passion for travel, you'll meet other engaging travel fanatics with similar interests, and you might develop a deep connection with someone else.

7. When you look at your 2016 Year in Review, you'll have a greater appreciation of your year.

Traveling in 2016 will give you memories you'll have for the rest of your life. It's an investment in your present and your future. Chances are that you'll meet great people, eat amazing food, and learn many new things. Instead of spending another winter wondering where the year went, you'll know that you created priceless, irreplaceable moments.

What are your New Year's Resolutions? Are there any other reasons that travel should be a top New Year's Resolution?

Good luck on all of your adventures in 2016! Be sure to take pictures and document all of the memories you're creating - 20 years from now, you'll be able to look back and remember.
